Hamilton forced to apologise after leaving baseball cap on for Justin Wilson silence

Race winner Lewis Hamilton has been forced to apologise after his baseball cap remained on his head during the one minute silence for recently deceased driver Justin Wilson following the Italian Grand Prix last weekend.

Hamilton has received much criticism after he didn’t take his hat off for the silence, and has had to defend himself from messages he received on social media after the silence.

Johnny Herbert, the British three-time race winner in F1, tweeted: “Disrespectful @LewisHamilton not taking your cap off for Justin Wilsons 1min silence.”

Hamilton commented that he had been ‘unaware’ that the minute silence was taking place just after the driver’s parade, and was forced to apologise on Twitter:

I was told it was going to be on the front of the grid,” Hamilton said. “I was standing there with my music on, posing. I would never disrespect a driver. I have the upmost respect and appreciation for Justin and his family. My sincere apologies.”

However, many fans voiced their disappointment at Hamilton with Twitter user AnaColinaF1 tweeting: ‘I’m a big fan of Lewis Hamilton but I must admit that he should have taken his cap off during the minute silence for Justin Wilson.’
Alarob69 also tweeted and said: ‘Really poor not seeing Lewis Hamilton remove his cap during the minute’s silence. Again highlighting his total arrogance. #F1 #skyf1 #bbcf1,’ while Stephanie Parker wrote on the social media site: ‘I idolise Lewis Hamilton, but why didn’t he take off his cap when 19 others can #JustinWilson #f1 #teamLH
