Red Bull poses a “major threat” to Mercedes in Hungary

Mercedes AMG Petronas Team Principal Toto Wolff perceives Red Bull Racing as a “major threat” in the upcoming Grand Prix in Hungary this weekend.

Following a double podium finish for Mercedes at the British Grand Prix nearly two weeks ago, it has looked good for the team so far, with driver Lewis Hamilton grabbing his fourth victory of the 2016 season.

Due to the twisty nature of the track, Wolff believes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg will have to be “flawless” to secure a win this weekend.

This circuit has not been kind to us over the past two years and it plays to the strength of our rivals,” Wolff reported. Wolff has reason to be concerned. During the 2015 race, Mercedes were able to secure a podium finish, with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel coming out on top, followed by Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull, although Hamilton was able to secure pole.

The Red Bull, for example, is a car that functions well where high drag isn’t penalised as much as at other types of circuit. So, it wet conditions and at low-speed circuits such as the Hungaroring, they are a major threat.

We will need to be flawless to come out on top at this track.

FP1 in Hungary starts on Friday 22nd July at 9am GMT.
