Rosberg signs 2-year contract with Mercedes

Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg has signed a two-year contract with his current team Mercedes AMG Petronas, taking him to the end of 2018 with the team.

Rosberg’s contract was due to expire at the end of this racing season, but both him and the team were confident that they would be able to construct a new contract.

The German has driven for the team since 2010, and has finished second behind teammate Lewis Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship for the past two racing seasons.

This morning [Friday], Mercedes released a video on Twitter showing Rosberg and Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff signing a contract. They also released a photograph of the contract, stating it as “signed, sealed, delivered”.

A statement from Mercedes read: “We are delighted to announce that the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 team has signed a two-year contract extension with Nico Rosberg for the 2017 and 2018 Formula One seasons.”

Nico has been a core member of the Silver Arrows since the team returned to the sport in 2010 and has played a crucial role in the team’s success in that time. He has scored 19 Grand Prix wins and 25 pole positions so far with Mercedes-Benz and is currently leading the Drivers’ World championship.

The clashes between Rosberg and teammate Hamilton has made the team and Rosberg’s time with the team especially notable, their fierce rivalry being particularly recognised in the sport.

Due to this, Wolff did warn both drivers from the beginning of the year that he would not hesitate to find a new driver line-up if the two could not behave whilst on track.

As Hamilton also signed a contract with the team last season that will take him to the end of 2018, it now means that both drivers’ contract will run out at the end of the same season.
