Hulkenberg staying with Force India for 2017

Nico Hulkenberg has confirmed that he will remain with current team Force India for the 2017 racing season, entering his fifth season with the Silverstone-based team.

During the British Grand Prix a couple of weeks ago, Force India’s team owner Vijay Mallya confirmed that he had signed both Hulkenberg and his teammate Sergio Perez for the 2017 season. Perez remained doubtful on Mallya’s comment, saying that he wanted to take time over the F1 summer break and talk to his sponsors to consider wether or not he wanted to commit himself to another season with the team.

Speaking to reporters earlier today, Perez said that he may not be racing for Force India next year.

It’s up to me and [my] group of sponsors on what to do,” the Mexican spoke.

The decision is not down only to me, as I’m a very lucky driver to have so much support, and if we’re moving around teams we take the decision together with the group of sponsors I have. That decision has not been taken.”

“I hope I can come back after the summer break knowing what the future holds for me, that would be ideal.

Hulkenberg, on the other hand, was asked about his future in Formula 1 in today’s [Thursday] FIA press conference, where he confirmed that there was truth behind Mallya’s comments.

Everything is easy and relaxed. There’s not much more to add,” the German commented.

I think Vijay [Mallya] said what the situation is, and just focus on this year now. That’s the main focus really.

When he was asked wether or not he was to remain at Force India for 2017, Hulkenberg replied: “yes“.

The German Grand Prix takes place this weekend, with the first free practice starting on Friday at 9am GMT.
