Ecclestone plans to sell unrestricted access to teams’ radio messages

Formula 1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone is planning to sell unrestricted access of the teams’ radio messages to the fans.

Ecclestone wants to make a deal in order to deliver the radio traffic between the pit wall and the drivers as a package, for a fee.

At a recent strategy meeting, the somewhat controversial rules and restrictions on the cars’ radio’s were dropped, as the FIA confirmed that this was done “at the request of the teams and commercial rights holder“.

However, part of this deal means that radio messages which were previously clamped down by teams will now be out in the open, which anyone who is willing to pay will be able to hear. According to the FIA, this is to provide “improved content for fans and spectators“.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has backed Ecclestone’s decision, welcoming the release of the messages to the public.

We believe that it is a necessary part of entertaining the fans,” he said.
