Alonso to start last at Spa after another grid penalty

McLaren’s Fernando Alonso will start today’s Belgian Grand Prix at the back of the grid due to another power unit change.

Alonso was hit by a 35-place grid penalty after taking a new power unit on Friday following a water leak.

He was also unable to partake in Qualifying after a problem with his McLaren forced him to stop on his out-lap. This prompted more components to be replaced on his car, giving him an overall grid penalty of 60 places, putting him behind Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who has been hit by a 55-place penalty.

Obviously it’s painful when you have reliability problems such as these, but at the end of the day it’s part of our learning process,” Alonso spoke on the matter.

We know what we have to do; we have to understand what’s still too fragile in the PU, reinforce those parts, and make sure that next year we have a PU that’s powerful and strong enough to be capable of fighting at the front.

The 2-time World Champion also took to social media to make fun of the penalties that he and Hamilton have received, by flipping the grid to make it look as if they are at the front.
