Jenson Button to retire from F1?

McLaren’s Jenson Button’s future is cast in doubt following the expectation that he will be replaced by rookie Stoffel Vandoorne for the 2017 season.

McLaren have insisted they will not decide on their future driver line-up until September, during discussions during next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Despite this, reports over the Belgian Grand Prix weekend suggested that Button has been told that he would be replaced by Vandoorne, which Ron Dennis has spoken against.

We’ve always said that Monza would be when we discuss it internally,” Dennis spoke.

A final board decision will be taken at the end of September – that’s the plan and it’s always been the plan.

Button has also been linked with a possible seat at Williams for next year, although it has been reported that he may not be driving for them in 2017 after all.

With an overhaul of regulations for 2017, Williams are not expected to be in a position to fight for the title, due to the funds required to make such changes are a stretch on the team’s budget.

Therefore, the Brit’s future has been cast in doubt over his future in the sport, perhaps suggesting that at the end of this season, his 16-year career in F1 will come to an end.

Button has also been linked with BBC’s Top Gear, after Chris Evans announced his departure from the show in early July.

More to follow.
