Former Formula 1 driver Mika Salo believes that Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly’s recent form is more than just a poor performance.
Salo suspects that if this was the case, Red Bull would have already reacted to this.
In a team such as Red Bull, expectations are high. Ever since Gasly was promoted from sister team Toro Rosso, with each race came more pressure to perform to a similar standard to teammate Max Verstappen. At the time of writing, this has not yet happened.
Red Bull’s Motorsport Consultant Dr Helmut Marko has previously publicly criticised Gasly, and has given him until the annual summer break to deliver the expected performance.
Despite this, Salo is sure that Gasly’s weak performance must have more to it than meets the eye.
“Red Bull Racing normally reacts very quickly to such things,” he told Ilta Sanomat.
“If someone doesn’t do well, they’re put in front of the door.
“I think Red Bull knows more than we do. I’m sure within the team the understand exactly what Gasly’s problem is and why he’s still there.
“He has never been a slow driver in his career before.”
Gasly’s performance is further highlighted by the recent success of his teammate Verstappen, who recently won the Austrian Grand Prix.
