Former Formula 1 driver Mika Salo believes that Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas’ performance in recent races may endanger his chance at a seat in 2020.
As F1 enters the summer break, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is currently deliberating on who should take the second seat at Mercedes for 2020.
He is deciding wether or not to keep Bottas alongside teammate Lewis Hamilton for a fourth season, or to promote Esteban Ocon.
Salo comments that it is unfortunate that Wolff’s decision making period coincides with recent difficult races for Bottas.
“In F1, you’re only as good as your last race,” stated Salo.
“Valtteri has had two really bad races now. He has the speed, but the bad races hurt him.
“The start of his season was good. Valtteri was like a completely different person. But the last few races have been bad again.”
Despite these comments, Salo confirms that he is not in the know on Wolff’s ultimate decision.
“Only the team knows,” he added.
“I don’t even know if a decision has already been taken or not.”
